Philip G. Arnold

Phil Arnold is a highly experienced FELA lawyer with over 17 years of handling catastrophic personal injury cases. He successfully argued numerous appellate cases for rail labor in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Several of his appellate cases made new law benefiting rail labor, including:
- Armstrong v. Burlington Northern R. Co., 139 F.3d 1277 (9th Cir. 1998) (expanded FELA protection to injuries suffered off company property);
- Hajek v. BNSF, 186 F.3d 1105 (9th Cir. 1999) (vindicated constitutional right to an Article III judge); and
- Robertson v. Burlington Northern R. Co., 32 F.3d 408 (9th Cir. 1994) (trial counsel in hearing loss case establishing admissibility of OSHA and other standards into evidence in FELA cases).
Phil has served on many Washington State Bar committees, including the Washington State Trial Lawyers Association Board of Directors and the State's Court Rules and Procedures Committee. He received the 1992 Washington State Trial Lawyers President's Award, and the publication Trial Lawyers Doing Public Justice featured Phil’s work after the Washington, D.C. Trial Lawyers for Public Justice nominated him for Trial Lawyer of the Year. He frequently presents at continuing legal education programs. Phil has been honored as a Washington Super Lawyer, most recently in 2006, and received the highest ratings from Martindale-Hubbell for skill and integrity.
Phil graduated in 1975 with Honors from Gonzaga School of Law, where he was the Managing Editor and Comment Editor of the Law Review. He has degrees in Economics and Political Science from the University of Washington.
