Jim Cox is one of the nation’s leading FELA attorneys, with a career representing injured railroad workers that spans over 34 years.  He is a BLET Union Designated Legal Counsel and carries the highest rating from the only organization in the country that rates attorneys on their legal skills and integrity, Martindale-Hubbell.  Since joining the firm in 1973, Jim has handled over sixty (60) jury trials and settled over 600 cases.  He was lead counsel on many precedent-setting cases benefiting rail labor and other personal injury claimants, including:

  • Herrera v. San Luis Central Railroad Co., 997 P.2d 1238 (Colo. App. 1999);
  • Wilson v. Union Pacific Railroad Co., 56 F.3d 1226 (10th Cir. 1995);
  • Failing v. Burlington Northern Railroad Co., 815 P.2d 974 (Colo. App. 1991);
  • Cruz v. Burlington Northern Railroad Co., 773 P.2d 1117 (Colo. App. 1989);
  • Brady v. Burlington Northern Railroad Co., 752 P.2d 592 (Colo. App. 1988).

Jim is a past President of the Academy of Rail Labor Attorneys and continues to contribute his talents and leadership to that organization. He is a former member of the Academy of Rail Labor Attorneys Board of Directors, and the 1979 President of the Aurora Bar Association. He is also a member of the Denver, Colorado and American Bar Associations, the Colorado Trial Lawyers Association and the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, and a fellow of the Nebraska State Bar Foundation.  He is admitted in Colorado, Florida and Nebraska. Jim has earned an AV rating from Martindale-Hubbel, the highest it awards.

Jim earned his law degree from Stetson University in 1973.  He received a B.A. from the University of Florida in 1968. He graduated as a Distinguished Military Graduate and was Commandant of Cadets in the ROTC Program. Jim entered the U.S. Army as a Second Lieutenant in 1968.  He completed Infantry Officers Basic Course and Jump School at Fort Benning and then transferred to Special Forces Officers Candidate School at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. There he received training in Special Forces (Green Berets). Beginning in August of 1969, Jim served as a platoon leader and company commander with the First Division in Vietnam. In the second half of his tour, Jim was an Advisor to the Vietnamese Airborne Division. He was highly decorated for his service.
